I can depend on him for almost anything I can imagine. And when I'm all through imagining whatever I have to imagine, he w...

This is my tribute to the marvelously talented saxophonist, CARMEN LEGGIO (1928-2009). Woody Herman Big Band "Greasy Sack Blues" 1982

Woody Herman Big Band "Greasy Sack Blues" 1982
Episode is actually from 02/22/1961, I have a digital copy of that entire show that was sent to me. In addition to this wonderful but abbreviated version of "Woodchopper's Ball," the Herman band also played "One O'clock Jump" in the closing credits. Mrs. Price won a bar, who also had as the added prize, Woody Herman's band to come out and play for a party. Bill tells her if she doesn't have room, they'll rent a hall big enough for the band and her friends. Can you imagine having that party with Woody and the band? Amazing.
I danced in a show at the Riviera that featured Bill Chase, also part of a great group of musicians and close friend Tom Anastas who is playing saxophone here. Great choreographer from Rome, costumes by Paco Rabanne, original music from a composer in Paris, a really unique show that drew a lot of stars to the performances.
How lucky I am to know Mike Brignola, and to have had him in my band, what a pleasure!
JimCAP, my man Mike Brignola (Woody’s Baritonist 1980-current) told me Woody’s Clarinet (and Alto/Soprano he thinks) ended up at The Smithsonian. I went to (collections * si * edu), and searched on WOODY HERMAN CLARINET: 1. WOODY’s CLARINET: LeBlanc Paris Boehm System, 1940-1950, Gift of Jack Siefert (Woody’s dear friend) --------- Then, change search to WOODY HERMAN SAXOPHONE: ALSO, they have Woody’s ALTO + SOPRANO, also donated by Jack Siefert: 2. WOODY’s ALTO SAX: Selmer Radio Improved Super Sax, #19513, ~1934 3. WOODY’s SOPRANO SAX: LeBlanc Paris Vito Model, #17225, 1946-1950 ------------------ The problem of all this is we’re not sure if these are the last 3 horns he played. Obviously, he had several of each over the 6 decades he played. But, the 3 horns Jack Siefert donated to the Smithsonian are a good start.
I always have wondered what happened to Woody's Clarinet, Who has it?
The best Heard!
That first 40 second excerpt is actually, "Deep Purple" ;))
Bill was the best R I P my Friend
Really tragic plane crash of the group Chase doing great on the charts.
Élia und Andrea ❤❤❤❤❤ ich bin ein großer Fan von Euch! Klasse Mädchen, klasse Musik!
Loved Woody Herman and his bands. Got to share birthday cake with him one year when he played "Gillys" I remember when he walked out he was looking very feeble at first, this was very late in his career when he was forced to keep touring because of tax issues. But then he put the clarinet up to his lips, reared back and gave the downbeat. It was as though he lost twenty years of age in that single moment and he SWUNG his band. It was obvioius his players really loved and respected him.
16:44
why is all this so sped up ?
After hearing Sal Nistico I don't understand how people can get excited by Coltrane or Michael Brecker. This guy doesn't have that wimpy, shrieky sound that most tenor players adopted after Coltrane. Tone has gone out the window for technique, and listen to this guys technique! And he has a great sound.
I recall listening and reading about a band that performed this piece literally just after news of JFKs assignation. It sounded very much like this very recording.
Notice the impeccable dress of the band...
Great sound from that Conn 10M. My 10M is from 1953.
My 10M is 1941, and he can play it at least twice as fast as I can play my Mark VI! That's a metal Otto Link mpc.
I always laughed at Caldonia!
The most underrated and unheard of Tenor Sax player who ever graced the Earth bar none. He knocked me out at Al Hirt's Club on Bourbon Street in New Orleans Louisiana in 1961 or there about when I was one of the hottest Tenor Sax players of the time, because I could play Yakety Sax. I never did forget that night and never caught his name or heard of him. I discovered him a few years back here on RUclips. I couldn't believe it. Ain't this internet sumpton!
Oops => I missed this one in my 19 tunes complication: Sal 1965 Woody’s Whistle Solo beg. @3:07 Woody's Whistle (D. Gojković) Woody Herman Orchestra 1965 ruclips.net/video/H0DPPnY8D0Q/видео.html
Thanks for posting this wonderful tribute to a very under appreciated (and talented) musician. I became aware of Carmen recently through his contributions to the Bill Crow recording's "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland To Broadway". Since then I have purchased the CD containing "Smile" and "Tarrytown Tenor".
Total class.
My dad is Chuck Andrus the bass player!! It’s so cool to see him playing! Miss him everyday
“THE ARM” !!!! …A Woody Legend!!
Yes!!!! I love that you know that!
Awesome. I have this 33rpm album. I was one year old when they recorded this.
Thank you so much for posting this for Pete. Boy do I miss him.
Beautiful opening chords in Come Rain or Come Shine.
with compliments
Шикарный незаурядный музыкант! )))
Thanks for your comment - so very true! I ran it thru the translator => "Gorgeous extraordinary musician!" (Russian)
I had a low quality CD of this I bought in the late 80's. It got scratched up and unusable after a while. Good to hear it again. Frank Tiberi was on a break from the band at that time. Still a great line up and some great music from the Herd.
Gotta give some thanks to the BBC for recording these sessions.
Pretty the same line up as at the concord concert 1982.
Been playing tenor for 20+ years, I've heard his name, but wow man, this is the first time hearing him. He's an absolute beast on the horn, how the hell did I not hear him over the last 20 years?! He reminds me of Sonny Stitt when he's at 250 or higher bpm. What a legend. I mean, his articulation at that speed is mind-blowing and happens to be one of my favorite styles in faster playing. Again, wow.
Carmen's solos were articulate and you could hear in them his thinking process.
Excellent! But the Woody 's solo is missing...
Comments from Baritonist MIKE BRIGNOLA: “One slightly strange thing to me is that on this version of Greasy Sack Blues, it was shortened - leaving out the trumpet & clarinet solos, which always were in the chart. Also, I like that we played the whole chart on After Hours - it must have been when we first started doing it. We cut a lot of it out after that version. -Mike”

Amazing freak and unique monster talent. Carmen was a special.
He caught lightning in a bottle when he found Sal. And prob my fav lineup save the 40th anniversary concert
Pete knew everything about everything. RIP!!!
I wish to dispute the date of the episode. This is not may 17 1961. I know this because the episode has a male on the far-right seat of the contestant area.
Bill Chase, the best trumpet player of all time.

Beautiful, John. No doubt that Pete thoroughly enjoyed it.
Woody Likes! Gives Mike a "Oh Yeah..." and a "Blow The Horn Baby!" on THINGS AIN'T @0:50 and @1:19. HAHA
I M H O this song swings like %*(% and Pepper Adams made his mark with a great solo and that quote at 3.44. This is the song, I believe, that got him banned from taking solos in Kenton's band for a few weeks after joining; he deliberately played out of key to create tension and then resolve, but Kenton and other band members thought he could not hear or play. Ha . Funny how making making it into the bari chair in the Kenton band may be the pinnacle of a player's career, but for Adams it was a 6 month stint and addios, amigos. Lord knows where I read this, but I have read a quote by Adams somewhere as not being able to remember the title of the song, ( Intermission riff) and dismissing it as a '" dumbass tune", or thereabouts . Like a lot of other jazz musicians, I doubt he ever listened to his own passed work. Stan Getz once said in a radio interview that he never listened to his own passed recordings, he was only interested in today and tomorrow. I think the same also for Pepper Adams.
3.44 , 'yeah' . See the quotes below.
so many incredible players came out of Woody Herman big band during this era..Sal Nistico is phenomenal player..
Thanks. During his solo where PERK says "yeah," isn't it right after Pepper quotes "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm?"
